Chapter 2 In
times of trouble.
There's a game I
play mentally to cheer myself up. I wonder what it was like in the past,
over two hundred years ago when the Karankawa people roamed
these Texas shores. A
Spanish Padre wrote in 1768 about the Karankawa’s ritual
eating habits.
"Savages
lashed a captive intruder to a stake and then, dancing around they sliced off a
piece of flesh and roasted it in front of the victim. Then
they would devour the flesh, as the victim watched in horror."'
Doren my wife,
asked me how something like that would cheer me up? It makes
me focus on the progress that has been made least wise in the
food supply.
